It was a complete rip-off. It was a series of animations that required a set combination of moves to make it through. The only ones who managed to get far enough were the rich kids who could afford to keep playing and mesmerize the moves. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3XNQja0H7I

Dude don't let your childhood hatred influence your opinion of the game. The animation is spectacular. Some of the best I've ever seen. It must have cost a fortune to make. That's why it was a 'rip-off'.
