High nitrogen soil maybe? could be the strain but they’re starting the flowering process and they’re what 2 ft tall at most? Obviously a sativa strain by the looks of them so they should be kind of out door friendly... so what probably happened is he started them inside and moved them outside too soon and used the wrong lights and wrong light schedule inside. If he gets 2 ounces wet combined tops out of those two plants I saw I’d be surprised. And the thc content is gonna be llllooooowwww like maybe 10%. And he needs to trim the dead shit.

If I were him I’d cut clones start over and keep them inside in the proper conditions preferably in a homemade hydroponics kit until fall. Use the summer to make a proper compost soil with a low a nitrogen and high ash content. The internet has lots of soil recipes but my favorite is just coco coir, coffee grounds, potash, and volcanic soil maybe some veggie compost. Throw in some earth worms for good luck that way you don’t have to waste money on fertilizers and they add good bacteria
