I already have a feature (sort of) like that, I'm surprised you haven't noticed.

The Most Recent 20 Comments aren't really the most recent 20.

They're the most recent 10 parent comments + the most recent 10 child comments.

The reason being, one or two threads usually steal all the attention (like this one) so when people start other good threads, they don't get seen.

At first it was a matter of efficiency. Imagine a page with 500 comments. You'd need to run 500 "GetLikes" queries and 500 "GetSTFUs" queries on every pageload.

I think the way Yak did it is he only loads in the names once somebody rolls over a specific comment with their mouse. So I'll do that probably.
