When MZ started, I indexed (no Barret, different kind of Index) the ID of Parent Comments and Child Comments so that Child Comments started a couple thousand higher. I knew that replies were much more common and top-level comments would never catch up... so I could track them separately knowing there would never be duplicate IDs on a page.
