Id consider lurking something you do in hiding, like lurking on a website without logging in. Or at least without commenting/doing anything. So you can't really lurk in a chat, unless maybe you log in there, and just sit and read what people talk about without participating.
Idling, being logged in waiting for someone (not tr) to drop in, is perfectly acceptable, and also a necessity.
